Elderly people in the days of the pandemic: Latif Demirci's unforgettable drawings

When we are asked who best described the experiences and feelings of the elderly during the the pandemic, especially during the days when they were restricted to their homes, one of the first names that comes to mind is the work of the editorial cartoonist Latif Demirci.

Latif Demirci, in his corner on the front page of the Hürriyet newspaper, has described the human conditions created by the pandemic, starting from the first days of Covid-19, using the power of humor in the best way possible. Doing this, he often chose his heroes from the elderly.

The old man walking down the street with a shopping bag in his hand and a 65+ stamp on his shoulder – reminiscent of concentration camps – was a visual we used a lot in our presentations to explain age discrimination during the pandemic.

Unfortunately, we lost Latif Demirci on June 5, 2022. We remember him with gratitude.
