With the support of the “Sivil Düşün” (Think Civic) program supported by the EU Delegation, we organized the “Age-Friendly Cities Workshop” in Istanbul on 19 December 2019 with the participation of representatives and experts from local governments, academia, public institutions and civil society.
The workshop was an interactive discussion, exchange of ideas, and sharing of experiences, focusing on solutions rather than problems.
Assoc. Prof. Murat Şentürk and his team from the Department of Sociology at I.U. provided support for the content and organized the workshop. The workshop was moderated by Evren Sener Ünal, who is experienced in these issues.
With a team from different disciplines, we summarized the definition/requirements of “Age-Friendly City” developed by the World Health Organization under four main headings:
- Space and Accessibility
- Healthy and Active Living
- Social Inclusion
- Economics of old age, employment, poverty
We organized our workshop around these inevitably intertwined topics.
We would like to thank all our guests who actively participated in our event all day and shared their time, experiences, opinions and suggestions with us.
This meeting has been an important step towards “Collaboration for Age-Friendly Cities”.
We will continue to work with new collaborations and new meetings to develop elderly-friendly policies and models for our cities.
